[The Beginning.]



It's a sunny Thursday afternoon. A small girl, about the age of 7, walks out of the house and gets into the car with her mom.



"Why do I have to go, mom?" She asks.



"Don't you want to learn so you can be successful later in life?"



The girl sighs, and thinks.

"But I HATE Religious E.D. Mom. And theres that boy in my class that I hate."



"Just ignore him and you'll make it through."



They pull into the church parking lot, and the little girl steps out of the car.



"Remember, Bri. I will be right down the hallway in a few minutes. I just have to go and park the car. Good luck!"



"O.k." Says Bri. She walks into the building and goes up the stairs to her classroom. She takes out her notebook and starts to draw. Then "he" comes in.



Bri and the boy stare at each other with a mean look. But little does the boy know that there lies a deep secret behind those Ice Blue eyes of hers.



The boy looks at Bris drawing and laughs slightly.

"Get away Doug! Your so mean!"



She holds her notebook close to her. When Doug walks away she looks at what she drew and sighs.



"Why does he have to be so mean..." She thinks to herself.



During the class, the teacher tells the students to write down something that happened to them over the week, and how it affected them.



The teacher looks at Bri. "Bri? Would you like to share what you have written?"

"Uhh. Sure." She stands up and clears her throat, trying to muster the strength to read in front of everyone.

"The thing that happened to me over the week. I entered in the schools science fair, and won second place."

"That's good. Now how did it affect you?" Asked the teacher.

Bri gulps as she reads from her paper.

"How did this affect me? I was disappointed that I didn't win, but it also taught me that I should do better next time." She smiles at the teacher. But soon the smile turns into a frown surrounded by red.

"Of course you lost. You're so dumb that you couldn't even impress the teacher!" The voice screams across the room.

"Douglas! That is nothing to say to anyone! Now say you're sorry to Bri..." The teachers words are cut short as she turns around. She sees Bri running out of the classroom, crying.



Bri runs down the hall. Her mother sitting in a chair at the end of the hallway.

"Bri what's wrong? Why aren't you in class?" She asks.

Bri tells her mom the whole story. Her mom stands up.

"Ok. Well lets go home, I can probably get one of the others to do the Hall Duty."



As they walk past the classroom, Bri glances in. Doug looks at her with a depressed look on his face. And just as she's out of his view, she vanishes from his mind as he continues with his work.



[Part 2: Years]



As the years go by, there was never a moment where Bri hasn't thought about Doug.



"I wonder what he's doing, or even if he remembers me..."



When High School rolls around, she gets her answer.



Sophomore year. Bri enters her Literature class and takes out her new notebook and writes down whats on the board.

She looks over at the door as some more classmates enter the room. And as the last one enters, she gasps and drops her pencil.

"Oh great" She mumbles to herself. "It's Doug..."

Her heart is racing. She is glad to see him, but also a little scared since they didn't get along so well when they were young.

She watches Doug walk by out of the corners of her eyes as he sits don in a chair a few rows over. He looks at Bri, but then looks away as the teacher starts class.



A few weeks later their teacher takes them up to the Computer Lab in the schools Library for a project. Bri sits down at a nearby table, reading a book for research.

When she looks up, Doug walks over to her table and sits down.

She's shocked, but also very nervous.

"Don't mind if I sit here do you?" Asks Doug.

"N-no. Not at all." Says Bri.

He looks at her as she stares back. They begin to talk, taking up most of their class time making jokes and laughing. Soon it almost seems as if they had known each other forever as they quickly became friends.

Doug rips off a piece of paper as the bell rings.

"Here. This is my AIM. I'll talk to you later?"

"Yeah you will. Oh and heres my Screenname."

She hands him the piece of paper. Doug smiles and walks away as Bri starts to head for the bus.

"Oh my goodness" She thinks with a huge smile on her face.



Doug and Bri talk everyday. They are partners in every project. Everyday she thinks, "I wonder if he likes me..."



But as soon as the year ends, communication grows smaller. Both become busy with family and jobs that they lose touch fast.



But all that would change in the late summer.





[Part 3: Reunion]



Bri's cell phone rings. The music tone continues its harmony as she tries to find her phone. She finally finds it, too lazy to look at who is calling.

"Hello?" She answers tiredly.

"Ey, It's Nick!"

"Oh hey whats up?"

"I need you to come with me to go buy some subs."

"Oh...ok well let me go get ready and I'll be out in 5 minutes."

"Aighty, I'm on my way."

The phone hangs up. Bri pushes herself out of bed, still half asleep, and drags herself to her closet. After she gets ready she walks out the door and gets into Nick's car as they head off to the store.



"Hey I hope you don't mind, but were going to have to make a quick stop after. My friend broke her ankle and I want to see if shes ok." Says Nick.

"Err...sure. That's fine by me." Says Bri.

So after they leave the store, they head over to Nick's friends house. Bri looks over at the open garage door. As she walks up the driveway she gasps.

"DOUG!!!" She says as she runs to him and gives him a big hug.

"Where have you been?!" She asks.



"I've been working. God I almost didn't recognize you." Says Doug.



All three of them head inside. Nick goes and talks to Doug's sister, Jess, while Bri follows Doug into his room. She looks at his computer screen.

"Oh my God! GTA:SA. I've never played it. Is it good?" She asks.

"Is it good? It's freaking amazing!"

She sits down on a nearby chair as Doug sits and plays GTA:SA. She can't stop laughing. Doug looks at her with a smile on his face. He's never seen someone laugh so hard from a game before! Then Bri's stomach rumbles...

"I guess I'm hungry..."

"I kind of am too. How about we go to Taco Bell and get something to eat?" Asks Doug.

"Sure. But what about Nick? He's going to stay here with your sis?"

"Yup. He's kind of got a crush on her."

She follows Doug to his car and they set off for Taco Bell.

While they eat, they both talk about what they've been up to. And that bond seemed to form again. Bri's heart was racing so much. She couldn't believe that she was with him again...



As the summer rolls by, they spend everyday with each other. They go everywhere together, and they go to Taco Bell every other day. For the next few months, they are inseparable.



[Part 4: Junior Year]



As the new school year rolls around, Bri and Doug compare schedules to see if they are in any classes together.

"Dam..None." Says Doug.

"Wait! We are in the same lunch!" Says Bri as she points to the paper.

"Well I guess we are. I'll met you by the lunch line and we'll find a table then."

They smile at each other and walk off into different directions as the school bell rings to the start of the new day.



Four hours later. Bri watches the clock anxiously, waiting for the bell to ring so she can go to lunch.

"Man. Why do clocks have to be so slow!" She says to herself.

Finally the bell rings, and she rushes out of the classroom and to the Cafeteria. Se stops and looks around. She doesn't see Doug anywhere...

She decides to walk around the lunch room just to see if he was there. But as she started to walk away, a hand grabbed her shoulder and she twirls around, a big smile appears on her face as her cheeks turn slightly rosey.

"Where do you think your going? You didn't even get any food yet." Says Doug.

"I was going to go look for you." She says back.

They get their food and find a table. Bri looks around. It's all her friends she met in her first two years! As they talk, make jokes, and find out whats been up, Bri always sneaks a glance at Doug. Little did she know that this year would test their friendship.



As he weeks go by, Doug and Bri spend a little less time together because of work and school. But she never misses a chance to talk to him on AOL Instant Messenger. Only this night, Doug wasn't online. She waits for hours. hoping he will sign on. But eventually gives up when 2a.m. comes around.

The next day at school, Bri didn't see Doug anywhere. She was finally relieved when he showed up late to lunch.

"Hey Doug where have you been last night?" She asks.

"Oh. Sorry, I was busy." Says Doug.

"Oh. Ok." She says as she continues eating and listening to the conversations.



After school, Bri waits by the back doors for Doug and Nick. When they arive, they walk out of the school. And as usual, Bri walks by Doug's side. Something seemed different about today. She had a bad feeling. She starts to slow down as the thoughts race through her mind. The conversation between Doug an Nick echoing past her as she walks on.



After Doug drops off Nick, He takes Bri to her house.

"Wanna hang out later, Doug?"

"Uhh. Sure why not. I have a new game we could play."

"Great! It's set then!" She says happily as she jumps out of the car.

She waves at him as he drives off into the distance. Her heart racing, but she just can't seem to shake off the feeling like something bad is going to happen.



Soon, Doug calls her on her cell.

"You ready to go?" He asks, on the other line.

"Yup sure am! We're going to Taco Bell first though right? I'm starving..."

"Yea we'll go there first. Then we'll head back to my place."

The night rolls on a they eat, then head back to his house. They play the new game and have a bunch of laughs. Then Doug's mom comes in.

"Doug, it's 10:30. It's a school night."

"Ok mom." He says.

As they enter the car, Bri asks out of curiosity.

"So what were you and Nick talking about after school?"

Doug's face goes white. He hesitates his answer.



"Well...Nick brought over some stuff..and..."

Bri's face sills with fright, as she turns into a ghostly white.

"He got you to do...drugs?" She looks at him, saddened.

Doug stops the car in a nearby parking lot. Bri starts to become more and more sad, but tried to hold in the tears. But they force themselves out as she starts to cry uncontrollably.

"Why would you..." She can barely speak. Doug hold his head in his hands. He feels awful.

"Doug. I care about you more than you ever know...I don't want you to d.." She stops her sentence and cant control herself as she cries more. Doug reaches over and pulls her in, trying to calm her down. Sadly enough even though he knows he can't. She finally calm down as she pulls herself away from him.

Doug looks at her, with a caring look.

"Doug...don't you understand...I care about you so much..."

"Bri...you are my best friend in the whole world." He says as he lightly holds her chin up and stares into her eyes. "If you weren't here...I would probably be a drug addict by now. Hell I would probably even be dead if it weren't for you..."

Those words make her stop crying as she stares into his eyes.

"Promise you wont do it again? It would absolutely kill me if you did...and I found out you were dead."

He looks into her eyes as he holds her hand.

"I promise."



She looks at him and weakly smiles. She gets out of the car and walks through the lawn to her house, and watches as he pulls away into the night.



Over the next few months, and through the school year, they still hang out just as much. But Bri notices that they begin to see each other less and less as the months go on.

And soon they only see each other once a week. She begins to get depressed, and wonder if she will ever be truly "with" him.



But just as soon as she gets the thought, she meets another guy and they start dating. But she just can't take her mind of of Doug. She misses him too much.

But the new boyfriend gradually convinces her that she will never be with Doug.





[Part 5: Ending]



Bri is enraged. She slams the door to her boyfriends house behind her, and calls up Doug, scared to death.

"What happened? What's wrong, Bri?! I'll come get you right away." Says Doug on the other line.

Doug races up to Bri's boyfriends driveway. She jumps into the car and Doug speeds them away.

"What happened...?" Asks Doug.



Bri tells him the whole story, and Doug becomes just as enraged as she is.

"God I could kill him..." He says.

"But remember. I'm here if you need me in the future. I'm still you're best friend."



They go out to eat and Doug drops her off at her house.

"Now you're sure that you are going to be ok?" He asks, concerned.



"Yea. I'll be fine..." Says Bri as she wipes a tear away from her face.

Over the next few weeks, Doug keeps in close contact with Bri to make sure she is doing ok. He even calls her from his work when he is on break.

"Doug...I have something I need to tel you..." She says.

"Ok. I'll come pick you up as soon as I leave work." Says Doug.



A few hours later, Doug pulls into her driveway as she gets in the car.

On the way to Taco Bell...she finally said what she has wanted to say the past 3 years.

"Doug...I...I don't know how to say this..." She studders.

"I've wanted to say this for the past 3 years now. But I just have to say it. I love you..."

Doug looks at her, shocked, but doesn't say anything.

"It took you three years to tell me?" He asks intrigued.

"Yeah...because I didn't want to creep you out..."



"Well you ARE my best friend..." He says.



After they finish eating, Doug takes Bri back home. He watches her as she gets out of the car and walks up the stairs and disappears into her house.



Bri and Doug hang out a few last times before the new school year starts up.

But when Senior year rolls around, they lose contact. Doug has a new job, and a new Girlfriend. Bri decides to leave him alone and let him have time with his Girlfriend. She wishes so hard that the girl was her...but she accepts the sad truth that it will never be her.



She still thinks about him everyday of her life. Wondering where he is and what he is doing. She misses him with all of her heart. She still loves him, but is saddened at the fact that he thought she meant it only as a close friend. Every moment she had with him replays in her mind over and over again. But when she hears his voice, she starts to cry. She misses him more than anything.



And she always thinks of the fact that...
